What To Do in Cold Spring Columbus Day Weekend: October 9–12

It's a long weekend, and the Highlands are putting on a show. Here's how to spend October 9–12 in and around Cold Spring — from music on the riverbank and a guided hike at Manitoga to jazz at the Chapel, a history walk, and plenty for the kids.

Several events require tickets or registration. Check each listing before you go.

Friday, October 9

Make Your Own: Halloween · 3:30 PM

Kick off the long weekend with a witch's hat of their own design. Kids in grades K–5 decorate a hat to wear on Halloween at the Desmond-Fish Library in Garrison. Registration is required, so sign up each child individually.

Down by the Riverside w/ Jorge · 6 PM

Pack a picnic and head to Little Stony Point for live music on the Hudson. The Down by the Riverside series is hosted by the volunteer Little Stony Point Citizens Association, co-founded by Pete Seeger and Vic Schwartz. It's the final concert of the series: an opening band at 6 PM, then Jorge Caraballo & the Freakin' Ricans at 7 PM. Jorge brings the soundtrack; the river brings the view.

Saturday, October 10

Cold Spring Farmers' Market · 9 AM–1 PM

Start Saturday on the grounds of Boscobel, where dozens of regional farmers and makers sell produce, pasture-raised meat and eggs, cheese, sourdough, pies, pickles, and chocolate. SNAP/EBT is accepted. Check the market's Instagram for this week's vendors.

Trilce by César Vallejo · 6 PM

Split Rock Books celebrates a landmark of Latin American poetry. Translators Helen Dimos and William Rowe join poet Jeffrey Yang to present their Premio Valle Inclán–winning translation of Vallejo's 1922 collection, with glosses accompanying each poem.

Sunset at Dragon Rock · 4 PM

Watch the evening light settle over Dragon Rock, designer Russel Wright's home and studio at Manitoga in Garrison. The experience includes a moderate hike through the landscape to and from the house. Space is limited and advance reservations are required, so check availability before you go.

Cameron Brown & Dannie's Calypso · 7 PM

Bassist Cameron Brown leads a quintet — Dave Ballou, Jason Rigby, Lisa Parrott, and Tony Jefferson — through original compositions and an homage to Don Cherry's "cocktail suite" at The Chapel Restoration. Jazz by the river is a fine way to close out Saturday.

Sunday, October 11

Osios: Sculpted Views of the Hudson River · 10 AM

Osios is an Algonquin word for "beautiful view," and this hike visits four of them. Manitoga's Emily Phillips leads a free, moderate 1.5-mile walk to the viewpoints Russel Wright designed to frame the Hudson.

Fall Camp Tour 2026 · Noon

Thinking about summer camp? Surprise Lake Camp, a Jewish sleepaway camp celebrating its 125th year, opens its Cold Spring grounds to prospective campers in kindergarten through 10th grade and their families. Meet the staff and explore the grounds. RSVP required; no dogs.

Halloween Tall & Small LEGO Day · 2 PM

Grown-ups and kids team up to build spooky LEGO creations at the Desmond-Fish Library. Costumes are welcome. Register once per team.

Monday, October 12

West Point Foundry Historical · 11 AM

Spend the holiday walking through history. Local historian Jon Scott Bennett leads a guided tour of the West Point Foundry Preserve, the ironworks that forged cannon for the Union during the Civil War. The half-mile yellow trail is easy going; wear comfortable shoes. Meet at the Kemble Avenue parking lot. Registration required.

LEGO Dream and Design · 3:30 PM

Builders in grades 2–12 can drop into the library's weekly LEGO club, with bricks for free-building plus Mindstorms and WeDo kits for robotics. No commitment required.
