Where to Stay in Cold Spring

Cold Spring is an easy day trip, but it's an even better overnight. Stay over and you get the village after the day-trippers head home, a quiet morning on the river, and a head start on the trails before the crowds arrive. Whether you're after a historic inn on the water, a romantic bed-and-breakfast, a simple room near the train, or a whole house for the family, here's where to stay.

In the Village

Hudson House River Inn

Few places to stay anywhere have been at it longer. Hudson House River Inn has welcomed guests since 1832, when it opened at the foot of Main Street as the Pacific Hotel, and the riverfront landmark was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Today it offers eleven guest rooms and two suites, many looking straight out over the Hudson. You don't have to leave for dinner, either: the River Room serves year-round, and the Half Moon Tavern is the cozier, fireplace-warmed option for a drink. If you want to wake up to the river, this is the address.

Pig Hill Inn

A short walk up Main Street from the river, and just a couple of blocks from the train, Pig Hill Inn is the romantic choice. This small bed-and-breakfast sits in a historic building on the village's main strip, and its guest rooms come with private baths and fireplaces — exactly what you want on a cold Highlands evening. Breakfast is served in the conservatory or out in the garden, depending on the season. It's quiet, intimate, and right in the middle of everything, which makes it a natural base for a weekend of shops, restaurants, and early-morning hikes.

Cold Spring Hotel & Cafe

Right on Main Street, just steps from the Metro-North station, Cold Spring Hotel & Cafe makes for the easiest arrival in town: step off the train and you're nearly at your door. The rooms are simple and comfortable, set above a cafe run by hosts Jimmy and his son Adam. The cafe serves breakfast and lunch — sandwiches, omelettes, and more — so your first coffee of the morning is only a flight of stairs away. It's a practical, friendly choice for anyone traveling without a car, and it's pet-friendly for an added fee, so the dog can come along too.

Out on the Highlands Roads

The Garrison

For the big view, head to The Garrison, a 300-acre Hudson Highlands property on Route 9 that looks out across the river toward the distant Catskills. It's best known as a wedding and events destination, but it also runs a small inn with eight overnight rooms done in soft country shades of sage, cream, and mushroom. The grounds are home to Hudson Valley Shakespeare, so a summer stay can pair a show with a room. Book well ahead, since rooms are often tied to events — and reservations are non-refundable once confirmed, so be sure of your dates first.

The Bird & Bottle Inn

For a stay with a story, book a room at The Bird & Bottle Inn on Old Albany Post Road in Garrison. Built in 1761 as a stagecoach tavern along the old post road and lovingly restored, it pairs a fine-dining restaurant with a handful of romantic overnight rooms steeped in Hudson Highlands history. Having dinner and a bed under one roof makes it a natural choice for an anniversary or a special getaway, with no drive home at the end of the night. Dinner is served Wednesday through Sunday, and it's a destination rather than a walk-in stop, so reserve both your room and your table ahead.

Countryside Motel

Not every trip calls for a canopy bed. Countryside Motel is a small, privately owned motel on Route 9 north of the village, with simple, practical rooms, in-room refrigerators, and parking right outside your door. That makes it a smart base if you're driving in to hike Fahnestock State Park or explore the wider Hudson Highlands, and a reliable fallback when the village inns are booked up on a busy weekend. You trade a Main Street address for easy parking and a quick start on the trails — a trade plenty of hikers are happy to make.

A Place of Your Own

Airbnb

Traveling with family or friends, or staying long enough to want a kitchen? A rental home gives you room to spread out. Airbnb lists homes across Philipstown, from places within walking distance of the village to quieter spots out in the surrounding hills. Stock up at Glynwood's Farm Store and Marbled Meat Shop, and you can cook dinner with a view instead of hunting for a reservation. Before you book, read each listing's house rules and cancellation terms closely, since they vary from host to host.
